Finding Joy in the Battle

Finding Joy in the Battle

When we think of severe health crises and the long journey through recovery, we often picture total heartbreak. But working behind the counter of my store has taught me that even in the darkest medical struggles, finding joy in the battle is how human resilience shines through.

Months have passed since I first shared the story of my regular customer and his 47-year-old partner, who was rushed to the hospital after severe, life-threatening seizures caused by decades of alcohol reliance. Today, her battle continues. Her health remains in a precarious balance—moving back and forth between the intensive care unit and a normal hospital room as her liver function fails. She suffers from frequent fevers and ongoing seizures, unable to return home.

Every single drop of liquid keeping her alive enters her body through needles in her arms. Yet, against all odds, they are still fighting. Doctors are currently running tests to see if she might qualify for a liver transplant—a thin thread of hope they are holding onto tightly.

The Physical and Emotional Toll of a Health Crisis

Navigating a long-term medical emergency takes an immense toll on loved ones. Traveling back and forth between home and the hospital every single day leaves little room for rest, emotional healing, or finding joy in the battle.

Exhausted and overwhelmed by stress, the boyfriend admitted to me that he briefly fell back into drinking just to catch a few hours of sleep. However, his commitment to his partner remains unwavering. Instead of giving up on himself, he made a conscious choice to cut his consumption in half—reducing eight cans a day down to four, every other day.

It is a real, honest step forward in his own journey toward health and stress management. Healing isn’t always a straight line, but every small victory counts when you are fighting for life and supporting a loved one through a crisis.

Finding Laughter in Unexpected Moments

Sometimes, the greatest gift in a hard situation is simply the ability to smile. Though she struggles to open her eyes and cannot speak full sentences, she still finds ways to communicate her fiery spirit.

Just today, he walked into my store, shaking his head with a tired smile on his face. He leaned against the counter and confessed that he couldn’t even stay at the hospital long today because she had made him so mad. When I asked what happened, he explained that she opened her eyes, looked right at him, and started yelling names, repeatedly calling him an “asshole” until she essentially chased him right out of the room. He was utterly frustrated and couldn’t understand why she was so upset with him.

I looked at him, chuckled softly, and told him that he should actually be happy she was calling him names. When he looked at me confused, I reminded him of where they were two months ago. Back when she first had those devastating seizures, he stood in my store crying, terrified that he would never hear her voice again. Today, she recognized him, and she had enough spirit and energy left to yell at him. That spirit meant she was still in there, fighting with everything she had.

Hearing that put everything into a completely different light for him. A genuine smile broke across his face as he admitted I was right, saying he was suddenly so happy she called him an asshole. It was a beautiful, tender reminder that even in the middle of a hospital room, love and laughter find a way to survive.

Choosing Happiness Every Single Day

None of us can escape the reality of mortality, but we can always choose how we live the present moment. Life is far too short to let heavy circumstances steal our daily peace. Finding joy in the battle isn’t about ignoring the pain; it’s about making space for laughter alongside it.

Even when facing a severe medical crisis or supporting someone through alcohol addiction, finding space to joke, laugh, and cherish a simple shared moment is what keeps the human spirit alive. No matter how tough the road gets, fight for every moment, make jokes through the tears, and choose to be happy today.
